“I’ve had the privilege of watching sport around the world from a Lions tour to the Dubai 7s and very few experiences come close to the events that took place at Gander Green Lane, the home of Sutton United Football Club, on Saturday 3rd December 2016.
Sutton United (The National League) played Cheltenham Town (League Two) in the FA CUP 2nd Round; after 90 minutes the game was even at 1-1 with a replay, at Cheltenham Town, inevitable.
The 4th official announced there would be 6 minutes of added time; considering Sutton United were down 0-1 at halftime against a strong and highly organised Cheltenham Town, most Sutton United fans would have settled for a replay and the opportunity to see their beloved team take on a League Two side away.
But, what transpired was nothing short of extraordinary. In the 94th minute, Sutton United scored and the game was won. The emotional scenes that took place at Gander Green Lane will last a lifetime.
They say the FA CUP is the “cup of dreams” where anything can happen. That the underdog can triumph and that a “giant killing” is possible. This was the case on Saturday. To view photos, videos, post-match interviews from the BBC and BT Sport, even banter from lifelong Sutton United supporter and comedian, Tim Vine, please visit @AbbottsFootball.
I’ve worked at Sutton United since May 2012 and it was an absolute honour to be present on Saturday.
Despite the importance of this match and all the hype, Sutton United welcomed 12 mascots and ensured they had a magical experience. A huge thanks to Darren Baker for making this possible. Sutton United are, first and foremost, a family club with unconditional family and community values. Once again, this was demonstrated on Saturday.
I’d like to say an enormous thank you to Champion Timber, Angel Plastics and Small Business e-Marketing for sponsoring the match. But, also to all commercial partners, at Sutton United, for their invaluable support.
